11 Oct 09 Cheap netbook sales bringing down laptop revenues, no brainers require no brains

Hey, this is probably surprising to no one, but here we go. A new market research report from DisplaySearch says that the overall mobile PC market is down about 5 percent over last year. The main reason cited for this decline? The increasing popularity of netbooks, which average around $300, and are much, much cheaper than traditional laptops. Netbook revenue is up 264 percent from last year, and have contributed to an overall lowering of the average PC cost by 19 percent. While this is certainly bad news for the PC industry itself, hooray for all of us, right?!

21 Dec 09 Barnes & Noble giving $100 for Nook pre-orders that miss Christmas

Haven't got your Nook yet? You may actually be in luck. For people who pre-ordered early enough to expect a pre-Christmas delivery, Barnes & Noble is promising a $100 B&N.com gift card if it misses December 24th -- which is apparently distinctly possible. Of course, if you're one of the lucky / unlucky ones to have this on offer, you've probably already seen the email, and if you're a different sort of hapless pre-orderer that won't be seeing a Nook until next year, this is just another reason to curse your lot in life. To think: not only are you not ushering in 2010 from an economy suite in a space hotel, but you're going to wrap up this year reading paper books, without $100 to show for it! Can't we do better as a civilization?

22 Jan 10 Microsoft patches IE security hole, human rights activities fully resume

Ready for an update? Good. If you're still using Microsoft's Internet Explorer (versions 5.01 to 8) for some inexplicable reason, there's a patch that you should probably install on the double -- that is, if you're a hardcore human rights activist that just might end up on a Chinese hit list. All kidding aside, the devs in Redmond have broken free from their usual monthly update cycle in order to push out a patch to fix the hole that was exploited by a group of sophisticated hackers last week. Refresh that Windows Update if you're scared, or -- you know -- just download one of the many other free web browsers that are far, far superior to IE.
