28 Feb 10 Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 gets unboxed, sized up against the competition

Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 started shipping to Americans just over a fortnight ago, and now one has landed into the capable hands of Pocketables. Boasting a 2GHz Atom CPU and some of the most unsightly adapters we've ever seen, this flip-open handheld -- which just looks too lovely to be saddled with the "UMPC" moniker -- strangely stirs something within our heart. 26 Apr 10 Droid Incredible comes with 'limited introductory offer' of 2GB microSD

All in all, we thought the Droid Incredible was a pretty nifty phone, but in our full review we still called out a couple ways Verizon and HTC could make it a little more... well, you know. It seems Verizon has taken one of our suggestions to heart, because we've just learned the company will ship new phones with a 2GB microSD card. No word on how long the promo offer will last or whether existing pre-orders are included, but we hear at least one early adopter got left out. We'll have to see if more speak up... like you, for instance. Let us know in comments if you get shortchanged.

31 May 10 ASUS launches netbook App Store eying a MeeGo future

ASUS didn't make much of a fuss over it, but its ASUS-branded App Store for netbooks did launch today. Not much to get excited about unless you're already pumped by Intel's AppUp store at the heart of ASUS' offering. The best part might be the announced MeeGo support, whenever the Intel / Nokia OS mashup is ready. Just what the world needs: an EeeMee, right Mr. Anderson?

18 Jun 10 Forrester: iPad and tablet rivals will kill netbooks

Apple's iPad may soon put a stake in the heart of netbooks, research analysts said this week.

The momentum is rapidly shifting from netbooks to tablets, said experts at Forrester Research and DisplaySearch in notes issued today and last Tuesday, respectively. And Apple's iPad is leading the charge.

20 Jul 10 Anatomy of an Achievement

Whether they annoy you or fulfill your nerdy collection habit, achievements have spread across the gaming landscape and are here to stay. The Xbox Engineering blog recently posted a glimpse into the creation of the Xbox 360 achievement system, discussing how achievements work at a software level, and even showing a brief snippet of code. They also mention some of the decisions they struggled with while creating them: "We are proud of the consistency you find across all games. You have one friends list, every game supports voice chat, etc. But we also like to give game designers room to come up with new and interesting ways to entertain. That trade-off was at the heart of the original decision we made to not give any indication that a new achievement had been awarded. Some people argued that gamers wouldn't want toast popping up in the heat of battle and that game designers would want to use their own visual style to present achievements. Others argued for consistency and for reducing the work required of game developers. In the end we added the notification popup and its happy beep, which turned out to be the right decision, but for a long time it was anything but obvious."
