Late on Wednesday, Asus announced its update to the Eee Box line of nettop PCs. Like recent entries in the category, it can be used either as a Home Theater PC or as a slim netttop, hiding behind a monitor with the included VESA mounting kit.

What's better than one hands-on report to whet your appetite ahead of the release of a new gadget? Why, two of them, of course, and it's the convertible
ASUS T101MT getting the stereo impressions. The machine has netbook specs (1.6GHz Atom N450 CPU, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, etc. etc.) combined with a 10.1-inch multitouch screen, which both of the sites giving early impressions rated poorly. Responsiveness is said to be less than stellar, and while one of these previewers was able to improve it with some extra calibration, precision near the top of the screen still sounds bad. Build quality looks good (for an Eee) and the form factor certainly looks nice, but we're losing a little faith in this entrant after watching the video below. Check it out for yourself and see what you think, but don't write it off just yet: these are still pre-production models and a little firmware magic could whip this tablet into shape before its release -- whenever that will be.

Would you believe that Acer is working on a frameless laptop with touchscreen keyboard? As far-fetched as the idea might be, it's certainly plausible, expected even. The idea, as rumored by
DigiTimes, involves doing away with the display's frame by printing colors directly onto the back of the display's reinforced glass substrate from Corning (a la
Gorilla Glass presumably). Coupled with a touchscreen keyboard, the rumored device should be impossibly thin by traditional laptop comparisons. Keep in mind that we've already seen this
Frame Zero concept pictured above from Fujitsu and Acer's arch-rival ASUS has been showing off its
dual-display laptop prototype with touchscreen keyboard for months. Even the
OLPC XO-3 plans to eschew the clickity keyboard in favor of a touchscreen version. And anyone who has ever seen a scifi movie knows that tactile keyboards and display bezels have no role to play in our computing future anyway, so we might as well get things started now -- or in the second half of 2010 according to
DigiTimes' sources.

EeeKeyboard, completing a long, strange journey that began way back at
CES 2009. Since then, we've seen the keyboard PC get a
June launch date,
run Moblin, get an
August launch date, get
gutted,
hit the FCC, get an
October launch date, hit the FCC
again, get a
capacitive touchscreen upgrade, get a
price and a February launch date, get
delayed, lose a space, and get a
late-April launch date before now finally launching... in May. Thanks for the memories, ASUS.

ASUS didn't make much of a fuss over it, but its ASUS-branded App Store for netbooks did launch today. Not much to get excited about unless you're already pumped by Intel's
AppUp store at the heart of ASUS' offering. The best part might be the announced
MeeGo support, whenever the Intel / Nokia OS mashup is ready. Just what the world needs: an EeeMee, right Mr. Anderson?
